A: The word “Om” represents the Divine State and does not pertain to any particular religion. Silence is one of the characteristics of the all perva...sive Divine State, which is represented by the syllable “Mm”. The sound of the syllable “O”, which originates in the Mooladhara and travels up to the Thuriya, has been combined with the “Mm” sound to produce the word “Om”. This sound “Om” signifies the silence of the Absolute.
The word “Om” which was found the most suitable to represent the Divine State, is common to all the religions. “Shanti” on the other hand means peace, tranquility. The purpose of repeating the words “Om, Shanti!” at the end of the meditation is that we may all attain peace through the Divine grace. Those, not in favour of this, may refrain from uttering them. However, this would only impose a narrow view on the broad minded aspects of the World Community Service Centre, besides disrupting the uniformity of the meditation practices.
