Swamiji's Answer : Every man carries within him innumerable imprints acquired through the generations. They can be classified into deep seated (latent) ones and superficial (patent) ones. In a particular case the evil imprints may ...remain buried deep inside the individual and the good ones may be functional, whereupon he behaves like a good man.
It may be due to lack of the proper circumstances or opportu-nities that the evil imprints do not come to the fore. They may remain latent in his genetic centre but turn out to be dominant in the children born to him, who may do all evil deeds not done by their parents.
In the same way, the good imprints in a person may remain dormant during his lifetime. A person may be running a butcher shop due to circumstances, but his thoughts may be of a sublime nature. His children may have acquired the imprints of these thoughts as a result of which their own thoughts and deeds will be noble.
Similarly a person used to performing oblations before God every day may still harbour thoughts of cheating the others. His children will naturally be inclined to carry such thoughts in their minds also.
To rid oneself of all bad imprints it is imperative that meditation be practiced regularly and a state of awareness maintained at all times. Care should be taken to avoid evil thoughts and every action performed with full awareness of its consequences.
